ReadySet Energy+ vs Prime Energy, a label comparison
Prime Energy showed up in 2023, went viral almost immediately, and became the drink that kids brought to school. That was also the drink that got flagged by lawmakers in the US and pulled from shelves in some countries over its caffeine load. Since then, Prime has adjusted its labeling and is now clearly marked "not recommended for children under 18."
Marketing aside, the can itself is just a formula. Here's what's on the label, and how it compares to ReadySet Energy+.
What's in a Prime Energy
The current Prime Energy 12oz can lists:
- 200mg caffeine, from a combination of caffeine anhydrous and green coffee bean extract.
- Sucralose and acesulfame potassium as sweeteners.
- Coconut water from concentrate (about 10% of the drink).
- Electrolytes: sodium (10mg), potassium (700mg).
- L-theanine (dose not always disclosed).
- Taurine, glucuronolactone, guarana.
- B-vitamins (B3, B6, B12).
- 0g sugar, 10 calories, 0g fat.
Real positives. Prime includes coconut water from concentrate (about 10% of the drink), pulls part of its caffeine from a plant source, and puts a 700mg potassium number on the front of the can. That's an unusually big electrolyte flex for the category.
Where the label gets more complicated is the source of that potassium. The 700mg headline number doesn't come mostly from coconut water. It comes from dipotassium phosphate, which is an industrial bulk phosphate salt used across processed food and beverage manufacturing as a cheap way to boost the potassium column on a nutrition panel. Coconut water tops it up. Dipotassium phosphate is legal, safe at typical intake, and the FDA classifies it as generally recognized as safe. It also isn't the same thing as the potassium citrate or potassium chloride you'd get in a well-formulated electrolyte drink. Phosphate salts dump additional phosphorus into the drink alongside the potassium, and citrate forms tend to absorb better with less GI trade-off at higher doses.
The rest of the tradeoffs sit in familiar spots. The caffeine is a mix of synthetic caffeine (anhydrous) and green coffee extract, not fully plant-sourced. The sweeteners are sucralose and acesulfame potassium stacked together, which is a common industry move but firmly in the artificial sweetener camp. And at 200mg per 12oz can, the caffeine dose is on the higher end of the everyday range, and part of what triggered the regulatory attention.
What Energy+ does differently
Energy+ takes a different set of choices at each of those decision points.
- 180mg caffeine, all from green tea. Named plant source, no synthetic caffeine anhydrous.
- Allulose and monk fruit as sweeteners. Two plant-based options, no artificial sweeteners on the label.
- 200mg L-theanine, printed at exact dose.
- 2g creatine (Creabev by Alzchem), plus 1g L-citrulline and 300mg beetroot extract.
- Sodium 25mg, plus B6 and B12.
- 0g sugar, 15 calories, 0g fat.
Energy+ doesn't try to be a sports drink, so it doesn't chase a huge potassium number. What it does carry is sourced from citrate forms (in Protein+, the electrolyte panel uses potassium citrate, magnesium citrate, and sodium), which absorb well without piling on phosphate. The Energy+ can leans into training and focus actives instead of the electrolyte column.

How to think about the switch
Prime carved out a lane by putting a big potassium number on the front of the can. If a headline electrolyte column is what you're after, it hits that beat. Just know what's underneath the number: dipotassium phosphate doing most of the work, with coconut water from concentrate on top.
The gap with Energy+ shows up on caffeine sourcing, sweetener choice, electrolyte form, and what the actives are built around. Prime leans hydration marketing and hype. Energy+ leans everyday training: real doses of L-theanine, creatine, L-citrulline, and beetroot in every can, plant-based sweeteners, named natural caffeine.
Two ReadySet cans a day covers a full maintenance dose. Studies use 3 to 5g/day; two cans deliver 4g. That's the piece Prime doesn't do at all.
If you want an energy drink that reads like a light sports drink, Prime has a niche. If you want a clean energy drink that carries its own training stack inside, that's Energy+.
