The "clean" energy drink test, what actually counts
"Clean" is a word. Anyone can put it on a can. What separates a genuinely clean formula from a marketing dressing-up is what shows up on the ingredient panel and what doesn't. That test is short. Five questions, all answerable in the cooler aisle in under a minute.
This is more focused than our longer ten-point checklist. If you only have time for five questions, these are the ones that draw the sharpest line.
1. Is the caffeine from a named plant source?
The label will tell you. "Caffeine anhydrous" is synthetic, made in a lab. "Green tea leaf extract" or "green coffee bean extract" or "guarana seed extract" are pulled from actual plants. Chemically the caffeine molecule is the same, but plant sources come with polyphenols and cofactors that affect how the lift lands and how the letdown feels. Pass: named plant source. Fail: "caffeine anhydrous" with nothing after it.
2. Are the sweeteners plant-based?
The sweetener line tells you almost everything about a "clean" claim. Sucralose, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium are the artificial standbys. Allulose, monk fruit, and stevia are the plant-based alternatives. When you see two artificial sweeteners stacked together (very common), that's usually because each one has an aftertaste and they're masking each other.
Pass: allulose, monk fruit, or stevia (ideally one, or two together). Fail: any of the artificial three. Extra fail: two artificials layered.
3. Is every active ingredient printed at its own dose?
Look for the word "blend," "matrix," "complex," or "formula" in the panel. If you see any of them, you've found a proprietary blend, which means the ingredients inside are grouped together with only the total dose disclosed. Individual amounts are hidden. Some of them are probably meaningfully underdosed.
Pass: every active on its own line with its own milligram amount. Fail: a "blend" or "matrix" line with a bracketed group.
4. Are the doses actually big enough to do anything?
A named ingredient at a tiny dose is still a marketing move. Real ranges based on what studies use:
- Caffeine: 100 to 200mg per serving is the everyday range.
- L-theanine: 100 to 250mg to pair meaningfully with caffeine.
- Creatine: 3 to 5g daily total. A can with 200mg of creatine is essentially a marketing sprinkle.
- L-citrulline: 1g in a can adds up to a real daily total across the day if you're stacking.
Pass: doses that land in the studied range. Fail: named ingredients at fractional amounts.
5. Is it third-party tested per batch, with results you can look up?
Every beverage should be tested for heavy metals and contaminants. The best brands make the batch results available through a QR code on the can or a public batch-lookup page on their site. That's transparency you can actually use. Anything less is a promise.
Pass: per-batch results, publicly accessible via QR or website. Fail: vague "tested for purity" claims with no way to verify.
How Energy+ scores
Running our own can through the same test:
- Caffeine source: 180mg from green tea. Pass.
- Sweeteners: allulose and monk fruit. Pass.
- Individual doses: every active printed at its exact dose. No blends. Pass.

Five out of five isn't the point. The point is that most drinks in the "clean" corner of the cooler pass one or two of these questions and quietly fail the rest. Now you can tell which is which in about 45 seconds.
