L-theanine + caffeine, the pairing that changes energy drinks
If you've ever noticed that a strong cup of green tea feels different from a strong cup of coffee, you've felt L-theanine in action. Both drinks contain caffeine. The tea also contains something the coffee doesn't, and that something changes the ride.
That something is L-theanine, and it's the reason a growing group of energy drinks (Energy+ included) put it back in the mix on purpose.
What L-theanine is
L-theanine is an amino acid that shows up naturally in tea leaves, especially green tea and matcha. It doesn't taste like much on its own, and it's not a stimulant. What it does is subtle. It supports a calm, focused kind of alertness, which is why tea drinkers often describe the effect as "awake but settled."
You can find L-theanine on its own in supplement form, and researchers have been looking at it as a nootropic (a compound linked to focus and cognition) for years. Standard supplement doses fall between 100 and 250mg.
Why it works with caffeine
Caffeine on its own is a straightforward stimulant. It ramps you up, sharpens your focus for a bit, and eventually drops off. At high doses, or in people who are sensitive, that ramp can feel a little sharp: racing thoughts, restlessness, a jittery edge.
L-theanine seems to take some of that edge off without dulling the lift. In studies where the two are given together, people tend to report better focus, less jittery arousal, and steadier attention over time compared to caffeine alone. Green tea contains both naturally, which is likely why matcha and high-quality green tea have that "smooth and steady" reputation.
The ratio matters. A lot of the research uses something close to 1:1 or 2:1 (L-theanine to caffeine), which is why formulators aiming for the smooth-focus feel usually match the two roughly in dose.
What it actually feels like
Descriptions vary, because caffeine tolerance varies. The pattern most people describe when they have caffeine plus L-theanine looks like:
- The lift feels present, not urgent.
- Focus is easier to hold on one thing for longer.
- Less of the "I need to move my hands" restless feeling.
- A softer landing when it wears off.
None of that is a promise. Everyone reacts to stimulants differently. But if you've ever wondered why matcha at a coffee shop hits differently from an equal-sized cold brew, this pairing is a big part of the answer.
Why we put both in Energy+
Every can of Energy+ has 180mg of natural caffeine from green tea plus 200mg of L-theanine. Both are printed on the label at their exact amounts. That ratio sits right in the range research uses for smooth focus.
We didn't want to build a drink that hits like a shot of espresso and leaves like a wet blanket. We wanted the kind of energy that lets you actually train, work, or drive home without a spike or a letdown. L-theanine is a big part of how we get there.
It's also part of the label story. A lot of drinks that market "focus" bury actives inside a proprietary blend and never tell you how much L-theanine (if any) is really in the can. We don't do blends. If it's in the can, it's on the label, at a dose that does something.
Common questions
Is L-theanine a stimulant?
No. On its own, it supports calm focus without stimulating you. Its role in an energy drink is to smooth out how the caffeine feels, not to replace it.
Can I take L-theanine at night?
People do, sometimes to support relaxation before sleep. But if you take it in a drink that also has 180mg of caffeine, the caffeine dominates. Save Energy+ for daytime.
Do I need to pair the two, or is caffeine alone fine?
Caffeine alone works. The pairing is about experience: how the lift feels going up and coming down. If you handle straight caffeine well, you may not notice a huge difference. If jitters are a common problem for you, the pairing usually helps.
What ratio should I look for?
Research trends toward roughly 1:1 or 2:1 L-theanine to caffeine. Energy+ is close to 1:1 at 200mg L-theanine and 180mg caffeine, which is where the smooth-focus feel tends to land.
L-theanine isn't a magic ingredient, but it's one of the few things you can add to caffeine that meaningfully changes how the drink feels. That's why we designed Energy+ around the pairing instead of just cranking the caffeine number higher.
